New Year’s Resolution Season is Here
IN knows New Year’s Resolutions are hard to keep. Heck, we’ve had the same one—get rich quick—for 11 years and counting. However, you’re not alone on your journey. Local experts are here to help you achieve your goals for the New Year and to help you all along the way. You’ve got the whole year ahead of you. Here’s to achieving all of your New Year’s Resolutions. We’ll still keep working at getting rich.
Resolution: To make fitness and exercise a priority
We all have good intentions, but we’re not perfect. What are some New Year’s Resolution pitfalls regarding fitness people should avoid?
“Forget about New Year’s resolutions. They’re a waste of time, and we almost always break them and then feel lousy because we do. Do the best you can, when you can, and as much as you can. And do it all for somebody else, not yourself.”
—Nancy LaNasa, Abhaya Yoga Center
“When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, the biggest pitfalls regarding fitness that people should avoid include setting unrealistic goals, as well as lack of variety in an exercise routine. As far as goals, you always should remember where you are starting. You must set realistic goals so that you do not get discouraged. When it comes to variety, you have to incorporate variety in order to see results. Going out and doing the exact same exercises every day is not going to produce very good results. Find things that you enjoy and incorporate them into your exercise routine.”—Kenzie Presnell, Fixed on Fitness

“Most of us with hectic schedules are trying to squeeze 30 hours into a 24-hour day. The body needs rest to build immunity, heal, and reduce stress. Most New Year’s resolutions require us to quit something we desire (but is bad for us) or add an activity to our already busy schedule. Why not add something that feels good but adds health and peace to your week? Any type of spa treatment can allow you to pause, refresh and heal. Massage has been shown to increase endorphins, which make us feel euphoric and refreshed.”—Mary Anne Aanestad, Still Waters Day & Medical Spa

Resolution: To make my overall health and wellness a priority
What are some tips for those of us looking to focus on our overall health and wellness in the New Year?
“My specialty is stress reduction. More studies are showing the relationship with stress and overall health and well being, especially the cortisol connection. The body is its own healer, but sometimes it needs a kick start and some support. That is the beauty of acupuncture. The reason it can treat so many health issues is that it simply stimulates the body to do its own healing.”—Bonnie McLean, O.M.D., A.P., R.N.
“Get your testosterone levels checked. Ensuring your testosterone levels are correct can help a man maintain low body fat and provide a higher energy level.”—Dr. Charles Yowell, Baptist Medical Group

“Healthy choices are the cornerstone of wellness. Proper maintenance is crucial. At Pensacola Wellness Solutions, fine tuning of hormones is one way of getting the best performance out of the machine. It is about looking good, feeling good and being healthy.”—Dr. Ken Mitchell, Pensacola Wellness Solutions
“Gone are the days of waiting months for an appointment with a physician. Many family medicine practices like mine offer convenient, open access hours where you can walk in and be seen right away or call for a same-day appointment. There’s no excuse to put off seeing a doctor for an ailment, issue or lagging concern you may have. Come on in, we’re here to help.” Dr. John Molyneaux, Baptist Medical Group, Navarre
“The first step to good health is to have a primary care physician and to know your family’s health history. Is there a history of heart disease? Breast cancer? Colon cancer? Diabetes? Regular check-ups can catch these early, when these diseases are more amenable to treatment.”
—Sacred Heart Health System
“Mark your calendar for healthy living expos where health experts are on-hand to inform you about proper health and wellness.”—Dr. Ole Oleson, Baptist Walk-In Care
“Hypnosis is a powerful tool in the creation of a healthy, fulfilling, dynamic life. By changing the way we think about ourselves and the world, we can permanently transform toxic habits into healthy ones. Anything else is merely a temporary fix of the symptoms, not the cause.”
—Susan Dunlop, M.A., C.H.T., A Luminous Life Hypnotherapy
“I encourage all of my patients to walk daily, keep as active as possible, eat as healthy as they can, and laugh out loud every day.”—Dr. Sangeeta Patil, Baptist Medical Group
Resolution: To update my look! It’s not 1994 anymore.
What are some tips for those of us wanting to update our tired tresses?
“Update your style in the New Year with a Keratin treatment by Coppola to rejuvenate, revitalize, refresh and defrizz your new look, whether it be a cut or color. Sass it up with a chignon bun, frame your face with “Balayage,” or take the plunge and cut a heavy “Fringe” for the winter months.—Brittany and Hurst, VolumeONE
Resolution: To quit smoking
What are some tips for those of us looking to nix this bad habit in the New Year?
“Quitting smoking is vital to good health. The benefits of quitting smoking are immediate and multiply over time. Free smoking-cessation classes are offered at all three Sacred Heart Hospitals from Pensacola to Miramar Beach to Port St. Joe. Those aged 55+ can take advantage of free health screenings at the SENIORSpirit! Health Fair on Jan. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Conference Center on Ninth Avenue. For more information about Sacred Heart Medical Group physicians and Sacred Heart Health System services, visit sacred-heart.org.”—Sacred Heart Health System
“If you smoke cigarettes, seek help from a primary care physician who can offer you assistance in smoking cessation. If you stop smoking, your health and the health of those around you will be better for it.”—Dr. Sangeeta Patil, Baptist Medical Group
Resolution: To lose weight
What are some tips for those of us looking to finally win the Battle of the Bulge in the New Year?
“Many times we make the decision to lose weight for the New Year, but following through can be very difficult. Deciding on when to start is one of those obstacles. The longer we procrastinate, the lesser the chance of us making it happen. Another obstacle is the concern for cost. Adding weight over the years is not inexpensive in itself, however. We found that most of our clients were saving money because they were eating out less, were able to shop in their closets and often were able to reduce their prescription costs. The biggest pitfall probably is getting discouraged. It is hard to do it alone. Dieting with a diet partner or even in a weight loss program with supportive staff is very important. Also, setting achievable goals and having your results measured in more ways than just weight is essential. Body measurements, bioelectric impedance analysis and blood pressure and blood sugar checks are also indicators of weight loss success.”—Rika Edge, Physician’s WEIGHT LOSS Centers
“Weight loss is the number one New Year’s resolution. It is also one of the resolutions with the top failure rate. Weight loss can be slow in the beginning, but adding a treatment that produces results with a modest price can give someone the motivation to keep up with their diet or exercise. Still Waters Slim Wrap can reduce circumferential measurements to give you that extra reward. This full body wrap uses compression, minerals and steam to slim each area.”
—Mary Anne Aanestad, Still Waters Day & Medical Spa
